A little is known about the role of diabetes mellitus, liver disease, and epilepsy as risk factors for Dupuytren disease. The investigators of the current study investigated the strength and consistency of these associations.
The current systematic review and meta-analysis included MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases for the search for articles depicting an association between Dupuytren disease and diabetes mellitus, liver disease, and epilepsy. The frequencies of Dupuytren disease and diabetes mellitus, liver disease, and epilepsy were extracted. Pooled odds ratios was evaluated using generalized linear mixed models, adjusted for confounders. Heterogeneity between studies was assessd using an intraclass correlation coefficient, and was accounted for by a random effect for study.
The outcome revealed that 32 out of identified 1260 studies were used in the meta-analyses. Evidence of an association between Dupuytren disease and diabetes mellitus was found (OR: 3.06), which was insignificantly stronger for type 1 diabetes mellitus in contrast to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Moreover, a relationship existed between Dupuytren disease and liver disease (OR: 2.92). The association of Dupuytren disease and epilepsy was also found, yielding an OR of 2.80. Heterogeneity between studies was moderate to low.
Thus, the findings demonstrated that an association exists between Dupuytren disease and other metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus and liver disease.
